In Buckinghamshire, the 11+ is taken in Year 6 in early September by all state primary school children (unless their parents have chosen to opt out). This means preparation needs to start well before the test itself.

Many parents are surprised by how early Buckinghamshire families begin planning, either independently or with the help of an 11+ tutor.

The importance of Year 5 for 11+ preparation

Year 5 (children aged nine to ten years) is widely considered the key preparation year for the 11+. At this stage, children are developmentally ready to consolidate core maths and English skills while gradually becoming familiar with the test style.

Starting in Year 5 allows learning to build at a steady, manageable pace rather than feeling rushed.

Is it ever too early to start preparing for the 11+?

For children in Years 3 and 4, the focus should be on strong foundations, confidence and enjoyment of learning. Light support in maths and English can be helpful, but formal 11+ preparation is not always appropriate at this age.

Every child develops differently, which is why a personalised approach matters.

Avoiding last-minute pressure

Starting preparation too late often leads to increased stress for both child and parent.

A calm, structured plan over time helps children feel more confident and better prepared, enabling their mental health to remain positive while also supporting their wider readiness for secondary school.

Making the right decision about the 11+ for your child

There is no single “perfect” start point. An initial assessment can help parents understand whether their child is ready to begin 11+ preparation, or whether a focus on confidence and core skills would be more beneficial first.

At WSB Tutoring, our initial assessments usually take place in early March when your child is in Year 4 to allow for maximum flexibility when reserving a spot for weekly tuition to begin in the following September.

There is, however, opportunity to arrange an initial assessment at other times of the year depending on when your child is ready to start 11+ preparation.

If you are in Buckinghamshire or a surrounding area and are unsure when to begin, speaking with an experienced 11+ tutor can help you make an informed, pressure-free decision about next steps.
