The 11 plus test – which is known as the Buckinghamshire Secondary Transfer Test – is a mandatory test for all children who attend state primary schools in Buckinghamshire. If your child goes to school outside the county, but you would like them to attend a grammar school in Buckinghamshire, you can also register your child for the test.
Its primary aim is to support the selection process for the 13 grammar schools in Buckinghamshire.
What does the 11 plus cover?
In Buckinghamshire, the test assesses each child’s verbal, non-verbal and mathematical skills. It is split over two test papers, each of which takes 60 minutes to complete. Children are given a break between the two papers.
If you hire an 11 plus tutor in Buckinghamshire, like WSB Tutoring, we will work with your child to develop their skills in all three areas that are assessed. This not only increases the chances of your child performing well, but will also help them feel well prepared for the test, which can lower the stress they might experience around taking the papers.
But our work is not only about preparing your child for the 11 plus test. It is also an opportunity to prepare them for the transition to secondary school.
When will my child need to take the 11 plus?
Children usually take their 11 plus test early in the autumn term of Year 6, which means you’ll need an 11 plus tutor during Year 5 of their schooling to help them get ready.
Primary schools in Buckinghamshire will also arrange a practice test a few days before the transfer test and your tutor can work through practice papers with them as well. Normally the test results will be sent back to you within approximately one month of your child sitting the test.
If they get a score of 121 or higher, they are eligible to attend one of the grammar schools in Buckinghamshire
