Preparing for the 11+ can be a fraught time (for both parents and children alike!), but with the appropriate level of dedication and motivation, with sufficient revision time and potentially some summer holiday tutoring to focus on weaker areas, there’s certainly no reason why your children shouldn’t see success come September.

However, one aspect of revision that can often go forgotten about is actual test technique - which can be very tricky to master at such a young age. Even adult students can struggle with this and find that they run out of time to get all their answers down!

So, with this in mind and to help reduce any stress about the big day that your child might be experiencing right now, here are a few top tips from WSB Tutoring. And, of course, if you need any further help or advice, don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Take your time

Your child may well be nervous about completing the test in time, but make sure they know to take their time when they first sit down so they can read the questions carefully.

As the answer sheet is separate from the question sheet, it is vital that your child takes the time to match up the correct question number with the relevant answer number.

It can cost serious marks if they skip a question but forget to do this on the answer sheet, meaning that each answer is one question out.

Keep an eye on the time

As your child works their way through the questions, make sure that they know to check on the time periodically so they can be assured that they’re on track. This can be cemented during revision sessions and timed test papers before the day itself.

Have a good breakfast

Rumbling tummies can easily get in the way of concentration and focus, so make sure your child has a good breakfast before they set off. Porridge with some fruit and nuts can help give them the energy they need to pass with flying colours!
