Children in state-funded Buckinghamshire primary schools are automatically registered for the 11+, or Secondary Transfer Test, as it is alternatively known.
Some children who live outside Buckinghamshire can also take the 11+ test. Each year, many families from nearby areas such as Cookham or Maidenhead choose to opt in and look for tuition, hoping to secure a place at a Bucks grammar school.
Who is eligible for the 11+ test?
The 11+ test is open to children attending state primary schools in Buckinghamshire, unless parents opt out.
If your child goes to school outside Bucks, such as in the neighbouring county of Berkshire, you can still register them to sit the test. This is known as “opting in,” and it must be done within the official registration window (usually in the summer term of Year 5).
Missing the deadline can make the process much more difficult, so it’s important to plan ahead.
What should out-of-area parents consider for the 11+?
While eligibility is straightforward, gaining a place at a Bucks grammar school is more competitive for out-of-county children.
Key factors to think about include:
Test performance: Your child will still need to achieve a qualifying score
School admissions criteria: Some grammar schools prioritise children living within catchment areas
Travel distance: Daily journeys to school can be longer and more demanding
It’s not just about passing the 11+ test; it’s about whether the overall plan works for your child and family.
Is the 11+ the right choice for your child?
Every child is different. For some, sitting the 11+ test offers a valuable opportunity. For others, it may add unnecessary pressure.
At WSB Tutoring, we always recommend starting with an honest assessment of your child’s current ability, confidence, and readiness. This helps you make a clear, informed decision and gives your child the best chance to build skills steadily.
